Liver Detox Chai Recipe with Roasted Dandelion Root & Burdock

Digging and Processing Your own Dandelion
Dandelion is so prolific. Hopefully you can find a clean place with large roots to harvest some. I have an abundance of dandelion root in my garden. I am able to dig enough for myself and to add to my “Detox Chai. I offer the chai mix locally at the farmer’s market.
We dig the roots in the winter when the energy of the plant goes down into the root. After washing the roots and removing the leaves outside, we bring them in to be chopped and dried.
I used to chop all of the roots by hand. Whew! I just started doing a rough chop by hand and then use my food processor the chop the roots smaller. Once the roots are chopped I dry the roots on a screen by my woodstove. Once the roots are dry I roast the roots on a cookie sheet at 250 degrees for 20 min until they are chocolate brown. Set a timer and stay close by to be sure not to burn your roots.
I buy my burdock from my friends at Hi Hoe Produce and then chop and dry the roots in the same way. I do not roast the burdock root
For myself, I like to add licorice root to my chai mix. I like the sweet flavor and licorice has liver cleansing properties as well. I mix all of the ingredients up in a big batch and keep my chai mix ready to go in a large jar.
If you do add black tea to your chai. Put the tea in at the end after your turn off the heat. Steep it for only 5 min to keep the black tea from getting bitter.



Liver Detox Chai Recipe
Roasted Dandelion Root & Burdock Chai Tea

Ingredients:
- 10 cups of water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3–4 whole cloves
- 3–4 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 2-3 star anise pods
- 2 -3 TBP of fresh or dried ginger (optional)
- 1 tablespoon roasted dandelion root
- 1 tablespoon burdock root
- Option: Black tea added at the end for 5 minutes to keep the black tea from becoming bitter
- Other Optional Herbs: Licorice root
- Optional condiments: milk, cream, raw honey or maple syrup
Instructions:
- Bring water to a boil in a saucepan- Add all ingredients to a saucepan with water.
- Reduce heat, Add all ingredients. Simmer for 20 -45 min. .
- Turn off heat. Add black tea. Steep for 5 min. Strain entire mixture into a jar.
- Save some tea for later and enjoy a serving fresh
- Add milk and sweetener if desired.
- Serve warm or chilled.
How Often Should You Drink Liver Detox Tea?
You can enjoy dandelion and burdock root tea Daily and several times a week. I like to cycle it with other herbal blends. I tend to make my chai on days when I am home with the woodstove going so I can simmer it on top of the woodstove
Consistency is more important than intensity when working with herbs.
